Digital Archiving Secures the Availability of Future Scholarly Research
Stuttgart – The long-term availability of electronic publications is a major concern for librarians and publishers. Thieme Publishing Group, one of the leading scientific, medical, and academic publishing companies, has announced an agreement with Portico, to ensure their publications are permanently preserved. All journals and backfiles available through Thieme eJournals (www.thieme-connect.com/ejournals) are being archived with the organization. By working in conjunction with this non-profit electronic archiving service, the publisher underscores its commitment to making certain that its scholarly work is both secure and accessible for future scholars, researchers, and students.Eileen Fenton, Executive Director of Portico, commented, “We are very pleased that the online journals published by Thieme will be added to the Portico archive. As electronic journals have become a vital part of the scholarly record, the need for robust, multi-layered archival arrangements has become more urgent. We look forward to incorporating Thieme’s journal content into Portico’s active archive operations, and are delighted to serve as the secure repository of this portion of the scholarly record.”
Since its launch in 2005, Portico has archived more than 8 million articles for its customers. The system was built after obtaining extensive input from academic librarians and publishing companies. By working closely with them, the organization has developed a sustainable service that balances the needs of everyone in search of a stable, reliable and trusted third party archive.
"Long term archiving has become one of the most important tasks for the scientific community and publishers to ensure that information is preserved for future generations of researchers. We at Thieme, are pleased to be able to partner with Portico to assist in archiving and providing everlasting Thieme eJournal content in the future," says Thomas Connertz, Director Thieme eJournals.
Researchers, librarians, and publishers recognize the need for a digital archive to protect past, present, and future journals in order to avoid later problems. This new agreement demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the company to provide for the permanent availability of its scholarly research.
