Art has a large role in resident life at Silverado Senior Living

Art has a large role in resident life at Silverado Senior Living

Words may not come as easily now, but watercolors, collages, and woodcraft creations convey thoughts and feelings just as clearly.

Two dozen people with Alzheimer's and other memory-impairing conditions will display their artwork 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., November 19, at Silverado Senior Living - Newport Mesa, 350 W. Bay St., Costa Mesa, Calif. Several of the exhibited pieces will be featured in a silent auction to benefit the Memories in the Making program of the Alzheimer's Association's Orange County (Calif.) Chapter.

"I'm amazed at what our residents do with their art," said Jaqueline Jonovic, director of resident engagement at Silverado Senior Living - Newport Mesa, who leads weekly gatherings of the community's resident art club. The artists are in varying stages of memory impairment, from its early onset to more advanced. For some, paint sponges are now easier to wield than paint brushes. But each conveys his or her artistic vision through colors, shapes, and themes.

"The wonderful thing about art and why it's so important to our residents is that there is really no 'right way' and no 'wrong way' to do it," Jonovic said. "It's about expressing your vision and feelings. Being involved in art provides a sense of accomplishment. This is vitally important to people with memory impairment, because as their condition progresses and they lose the ability to do things that were once part of their everyday lives, they begin to feel they can't contribute to the world."

Art has a large role in daily life at Silverado's memory care communities. At Silverado Senior Living - Newport Mesa, meetings of the resident art club and the resident craft club take place several times a week. In addition, the Alzheimer's Association's Orange County Chapter holds its Memories in the Making watercolor class at Silverado every Tuesday. Art facilitator Donna Tryon, who conducts the Memories in the Making sessions, says the paintings demonstrate the abundant talents those with memory disorders have to share.

"When I work with the residents on their watercolors, I feel like I am on a treasure hunt, constantly surprised and impressed to see what they do with their art," Tryon said.

November 19's event is the first time artwork by residents of Silverado Senior Living - Newport Mesa will be displayed to the public.

"We really hope people will come to the show to see and enjoy what our residents have achieved with their artwork," Jonovic said. "That would be wonderful."

The event will include a reception. Admission is free; RSVPs are requested to (949) 631-2212. Silverado Senior Living - Newport Mesa is operated by Silverado Senior Living. Its website is: www.Silveradosenior.com.

Silverado Senior Living operates 18 memory care communities in California, Texas, Utah, and Arizona. Silverado, headquartered in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., also provides home care, care management, and hospice care through Silverado At Home and Silverado Hospice.
