Festival Methodika, Autumn, Venicia 2007

A seminar in two parts for directors, acting teachers, pedagogues and actors is taking place from 15. January - 3. February 2009 in the rooms of AKT-ZENT, International Theatre Center, at Berlin. Artistic director is Prof. Dr. Jurij Alschitz. The first part - The Art of Analysis - is from 15. - 23. January and the second part - The Art of Rehersal - is from 26. January to 3. February. The both seminars build on each other but on can visit the seminars seperatly.

„What does it mean “The Art of Analysis”? Analysis of what - the play? the role? the scene? Why directors, actors, and teachers need to do analysis? Which analysis they have to do? Analysis of the meaning, the sense, the content? Analysis of text and words at the table? Analysis through acting? There are several ways of analysis, which can open different paths leading in different directions with very different results.
A very important question is, how do we practically realise the analysis on stage? My seminar will show you several methods of analysis, it will show you the way from the table to the stage and back, the way from your imagination to the precise structure and composition, the way from your work alone to the rehearsal with actors.” J.Alschitz

This seminar is a unique opportunity for theatre practitioners from all over Europe to gain insight into the research process of EATC, following the traditional line of K. Stanislavsky – M. Knebel – A. Vasiliew leading to the actual research of Jurij Alschitz.

The analysis at the table and the rehearsal on stage are not just two procedures which follow each other in chronological order, but two different ways to approach the material illuminating the parallel life of text and action. In the discussion we find out one thing, on stage something different.

The first part of the seminar will concentrate on the analysis of the role and play at the table following different directions: vertical and horizontal, from different perspectives and on the basis of different philosophies and sciences. Furthermore, Jurij Alschitz has developed a new method for the analysis of a role by asking “40 Question of one Role” (published at ars incognita 2005).

The second part of the seminar will focus on rehearsal methods. Different authors and texts need different approaches. The rehearsal becomes a tool for analysis as well. In order to make a correct choice for one method, you must be familiar with various ones. This knowledge gives you the basis to find new ways for the realisation of your own artistic language on stage.
The seminar includes lectures, discussions, exercises on the main subjects and practical stage work with individual assignments.

The Art of Training with Christine Schmalor
In addition you can book a morning-training, which gives you the possibility for a warm-up. Moreover this training will focus on the theme: the creation of exercises. How to build, compose and develop an exercise. For teachers and directors the amount of possible exercises in their “luggage” is not as important as the understanding “for what” and the knowledge about the basic components of one’s own system. The secret of training is its “simplicity” which builds up to complex structures. This way you can lead actors from simple tasks to complicated compositions, from games to the realisation of scenes, hereby checking your own analysis. Training is one practical tool to establish a different relationship between actors and the director; for teachers it is the fundament of their profession.

AKT-ZENT, PROTEI, and SCUT were founded in 1994 / 1995 under the artistic direction of Jurij Alschitz as mutually independent international theatre centres in Berlin, Rome, Stockholm, and Oslo. Since then they have worked in close cooperation with one another in terms of content and organisation. In 2000 they joined forces to form the European Association for Theatre Culture with the objective of bringing together the world’s different theatre traditions, primarily those of western Europe and Russia, in a fruitful exchange. This makes it possible to examine methodological approaches for their universality. All its programmes are designed to promote the on-going further education of professional actors, directors, pedagogues, and scholars.
In master classes, seminars, conferences, laboratories, and festivals, previous experience can be analysed and new paths explored without interrupting the practice of one’s profession.
All activities in the three theatre centres are aimed at the research and exploration of theatrical processes. The association’s journal ”Ensemble” publishes discussions and the working results.
