Autumn Seasons Greetings from BITS Pilani Ragamalikans

The eminence of autumn is best understood from Stanley Horowitz quote, "winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all". Every year, for the Ragamallikans of Birla Institute of Technology and Science - BITS Pilani located in the heart of the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan, it's a mission with passion to stage a dance show during Navratri which is the jewel in the crown of autumn festivals of India.

Ragamalika, the classical dance and music club of BITS, Pilani was established in 1990 by a group of enthusiastic students and faculty with the purpose of nurturing India's rich heritage and carrying forward the Indian tradition by advocating the opulence of Indian fine arts. Ragamalika is passionately dedicated to the cause of promotion of classical music and dance amongst the BITSian public.

Ragamalika conducts cultural programmes and concerts in Pilani throughout the year. Its members are actively involved in the organization as well as the management of all activities related to the events, apart from participating in the performances themselves.

Ragamalika also organizes SANGAMAM - a cultural festival normally held in February every year at Pilani. It features eminent artistes from all over the country performing for a cosmopolitan audience of over 4000.

This year, on 07 October evening, in the auditorium of BITS Pilani, Ragamalika organized the dance ensemble Nrithya Ranjani. The items chosen for the evening performance included Mallari in Raga Gambhira Natai, Idadhu Padam in Raga Khamas and Adi Thalam, Adinaye Kanna another padam in Raga Mohana Kalyani and Adi Thalam, Bhajan Mayya Mori Main Nahi Makkan Kayo and Thillana in Raga Dhanashree and Adi talam.

The Ragamalika team for the evening performance, comprised of the Bharatnatyam dancers Aastha, Namrata, Aishwarya, Manjeera and Jayasharadha; the singers Riddhi, Deepak, Sriram, Vamsi Surya Manoj and Pratik with Harmonium; the Mridangam players Chandrasekar and Bharat; Hardik on Tabla; and the violinists Shravan, Arvind, Bharat and Ajay. The dances were dazzling, music was mesmerizing and singing was soul soothing. Its for sure, the audience who came for the show enjoyed it and those who did not come indeed missed it.
