05-24-2017 09:26 AM CET | Logistics & Transport

Press release from: Debrecen International Airport

From mid-June 2017 onwards, Ukrainian citizens can travel visa-free to most European Union countries (with the exception of the United Kingdom and Ireland). About 1.3 million people in Transcarpathia region can explore discovering the countries of Europe with an ideal departure point from Debrecen Airport.
"Debrecen Airport is the largest regional airport in Hungary, which also meets the Schengen criteria and it lays only 130km away from the Ukrainian border. (!) Thanks to continuous new route development, the number of passengers is also increasing months on months. This growth is not only beneficial for the development of the airport but also has a positive impact on the tourism turnover of the region. EU visa waiver for Ukrainian citizens in mid-June can have a positive impact on tourist traffic from Transcarpathia to Western Europe and Israel. We are optimistic that the number of guest nights spent by foreign tourists will increase significantly such as the occupancy rate of hotels in the region, "said Laszlo TAMAS, director of aviation development.
This year a new scheduled flight has been added to the number of available destinations at Debrecen Airport, from 26 March 2017, the first non-European Wizz Air flight from Debrecen Airport, twice a week to Tel Aviv. Another scheduled service has restarted to the third largest city in Sweden, to Malmö, with less than one hour transfer to Denmark's capital, Copenhagen. About Debrecen Airport:
In 2016, Debrecen Airport, the second largest Schengen criteria, was visited by more than 284,000 passengers. By the end of 2017, it forecasts more than 320,000 passengers thanks to Wizz Air’s based aircraft and Lufthansa City Line scheduled service to Munich Airport and to the summer charter flights. The Xanga Investment and Development Group, which operates the airport, is committed to providing more charter and scheduled services and cargo services from Debrecen Airport, and for this reason, it is actively negotiating with many international airlines, of course in respect of the needs of individual passengers and business travelers. The catalyst role of the airport in the tourism industry and in the economic development in Eastern Hungary is undisputable.
