Real Open Golf

A young golfer from Castle Cary, Somerset, is well on the way to achieving his dream of following in the footsteps of his golfing hero Paul Casey. Josh Knight (13), who attends Ansford School, Castle Cary, is riding high on the leaderboard of new UK amateur golf tournament, Real Open Golf (www.realopengolf.co.uk).

He won the junior final in 2007. And currently, Josh has a handicap of six, and is practicing hard to achieve a second win in the Real Open Golf 2008 grand final, to be held at the Belfry on 9 May 2009.

"During the school holidays, I practise pretty much every day," says Josh. "Even during the school term I try to get to the club as many evening as I can, depending on how much homework I've got."

Josh's prize for winning the 2007 Real Open Golf Junior Final was £200 worth of coaching with top 25 UK coach John Jacobs of Cumberwell Park. This took his game to the next level and the talented junior continues to receive coaching from Jacobs.

Josh - who has played for Somerset's under-14s for three years - plays regularly at Wells Golf Club, and says he has his sights set on taking his game to tour level. "If I get good enough, I'd like to get to the level of Paul Casey," he says.

But Josh is well aware that every aspect of the game has to be perfected to make the grade.

Even Paul Casey admits that the weakest part of his game is his putting. "[My] ball striking has been very, very good, I won't lie," Casey said recently during the PGA tour. "But definitely the weakest part of the game is when I get to the green."

This is why Josh is working hard on both aspects of the game. "For my last birthday, I had a set of Titlist Clubs, which I was fitted for," he says. "And I'm now focusing on being a big hitter like Casey and gaining a delicate touch for the short shots around the green, like Tiger Woods."

All this should put him in good stead when he plays against his friends from Ansford School - a game which, by all accounts, can get competitive. "We play to win, so the rivalry get quite intense! But it's all in good sport."

This year, Josh played in the EGU Reid Trophy held at Coxmoor Golf Club, Sutton in Ashfield (a tough under 14s international competition). And he has just earned himself a place in the Young Masters Golf final to be held in Shropshire in October.
