WEARE, N.H., Aug. 25 – Acclinet today announced that technology grants are still available for college students, teachers and nonprofit organizations in need of Sun Microsystems servers, workstations and related equipment.

Anyone interested can apply via the Web site of the New Hampshire-based reseller of Sun equipment: Only students, teachers and organizations who are not seeking profit are qualified. Applicants must complete a questionnaire and indicate what kind of equipment they're seeking and what they would do with it. Students must obtain a recommendation from at least one college professor, administrator or department head.

Acclinet hopes to announce the first technology grant recipient this fall. Acclinet Vice President William Sweeney said he's had a hard time finding organizations seeking donated equipment in the past, and he wants to spread the word about the program as much as possible.

“Believe it or not, it's hard giving equipment away,” Sweeney said. “We are committed to furthering the UNIX and open-source communities through the programs we create and support.”

The technology grant program targets two groups: college students and professors who are studying or teaching open-source and UNIX technologies and nonprofits dedicated to children's issues. Available equipment includes entry-level Sun servers and Sun workstations such as Sun V210, Sun V240, Sun V440, Sun Blade 1500, Sun Blade 2000, Sun Blade 2500, Sun Ultra 40, Sun Ultra 45 and high-end systems such as Sun E4800 and Sun E15K.

“With nonprofit organizations struggling to obtain needed funding in a challenging economic environment, Acclinet is committing substantial hardware and support resources to aid those organizations in furthering their projects and missions,” Sweeney said. “Giving back to the community is something we have been committed to since our inception.”

The technology grant recipients will be picked by a committee. The number of organizations and individuals who receive equipment hinges on the number of applicants and the availability of the requested hardware.

Acclinet previously donated equipment to the Southwest Health Technology Foundation Neuropathy Center and Baylor College of Medicine Children's Nutrition Center, both in Houston, Texas, and the public school system in Grand Turk Island, British West Indies. For now, the technology grant program is limited to applicants within the United States.
