EMRI to provide free Medical, Police and Fire Emergency Services to the people of Karnataka

India, August 18: Emergency Management and Research Institute (EMRI) today entered into an agreement to provide free emergency services to the people of Karnataka through its three-digit toll free number, 108.

The MoU was signed between Mr. Venkat Changavalli, Chief Executive Officer, EMRI and Mr. M. Madan Gopal, Secretary to Govt. of Karnataka, Health & Family Welfare Department in the presence of the Chief Minister Sri. B. S. Yeddyurappa, Hon'ble Chief Minister of Karnataka

EMRI will be launching the comprehensive Emergency Response Services (ERS) covering Medical, Police and Fire in the state of Karnataka. A total of 517 ambulances will be deployed in a phased manner starting from November 2008. The Karnataka Government’s Public Health and Family Welfare Department would provide land for establishing of the call centre as well as bear the expenditure on necessary equipment and material (software), equipped ambulances, running cost, human resources and amount for administrative expenditure.

On the occasion Mr. Venkat Changavalli – CEO EMRI said: “From November 1, Kannada Rajyotsava Day - the people of Karnataka will be able to access the free state-of-the-art 108 Emergency Services - 24x7. We have to thankful to the support of the Government of Karnataka for making this happen”

A centralized Emergency Response Center will be located in Bengaluru to receive calls through “108”, a toll-free telephone number available on landline and mobile phones round the clock, and from any where within the state. EMRI will bring in technology and service excellence to work towards improving delivery of emergency response to global standards over a period of time. It will partner with hospitals and nursing homes in providing free stabilization for victims. EMRI will also recruit, position, and train required people, including pilots (drivers) and medically trained persons (Emergency Medical Technicians-EMT) who will be present in every trip made by the ambulance while transporting an emergency case to a hospital.

The ambulance will be equipped with all the necessary life-saving appliances, medicines and other equipments and every pilot would be given mobile phone. This ambulance would be equipped with GIS and GPS systems. These will help locate the geographical position so that ambulance nearest to the victim can be dispatched. This would save a lot precious time.

Apart from handling the day- to-day emergencies (medical, police and fire), EMRI has made progress in Emergency Research & Training and offers a 2 year full time residential Postgraduate Program in Emergency Care (EMT-A). This program is the first of its kind in India that will deliver the highest quality education and comprehensive training in the field of emergency care services. To ensure continuous improvement and learning EMRI has initiated the six sigma program for improving the process and is working towards the ISO 9001:2000 for process standardization.
