Innov-X Systems Awards Portable XRF Academic Research Grant

Woburn, MA, July 30, 2008 -- Congratulations to Dr. Nancy E. Johnson, Postdoctoral Fellow in the Rural Cancer Control Training Program at the Prevention Research Center in the Markey Cancer Center, University of Kentucky, Lexington, Kentucky, on receiving an Innov-X Systems Academic & Research Relations Grant Award. Dr. Johnson’s research project, Portable XRF Screening of Trace Metals in Soil for a Non-Mining Town in Kentucky, is being carried out in Wilmore, Kentucky, a small non-mining town. Dr. Johnson is working in conjunction with Dr. Malinda Stull and Undergraduate Researcher, Emily Rehner, of the Department of Natural Science at Asbury College, Wilmore, KY. According to Dr. Johnson, “the project will develop pilot data, and serve as a control, for extension of this work to include a similar soil multiple metals survey in small towns in the Coal Fields of Eastern Kentucky related to both childhood lead poisoning and the extraordinarily high prevalence of lung cancer in the region.” Her research team will “determine the background measurements of trace metals, including Pb, As, Cd and Hg in the small town of Wilmore Kentucky”. “Soil samples from randomized locations through residential and school areas in Wilmore Kentucky will be collected and analyzed for the presence of lead and other metals”. Dr. Johnson stated that they will use “portable X-ray fluorescence (PXRF) analyzers to obtain rapid in-situ elemental analyses of top soil.”

Portable XRF provides fast and simple in-situ elemental analysis of Mg through U, from PPM to high percentage levels. In a matter of seconds, it allows simultaneous measurements of up to 25 elements. The Innov-X Academic Relations Program encourages and supports research into applications where in-situ XRF measurements expand or enhance a knowledge base. It puts the power of portable XRF in researchers’ hands allowing them to take it to the field, where it really counts. Innov-X Academic Research Grants include the loan of an analyzer, technical training and/or consultation, and sponsorship at a technical conference to present the research findings.
