Erythropoietin is a substance produced by the kidney that leads to the formation of red blood cells in the bone marrow. It is a glycoprotein hormone which regulates erythropoiesis (Red Blood Cell production). For erythrocyte precursors present in the bone marrow, EPO acts as a cytokine.
