A.W. Watts Senior Center Thanks Annual Fund Contributors

Hopkinsville, KY – On May 30th the A.W. Watts Senior Center received the last of the major outstanding contributions to the inaugural Annual Fund campaign which began February 1, 2008. The Annual Fund campaign grossed $22,826 from 188 contributors to benefit the “Meals on Wheels” program.

“We are honored and blessed to be regarded so highly by our local community that they would support us in such a manner. The campaign far exceeded our goal and expectations. We thank all our donors, the volunteers and staff at the senior center who worked hard to make this campaign a success. This annual fund will enable us to reduce hunger and malnutrition for over 20 additional seniors all year long,” said Nell Lile, Board Chairman.

The A.W. Watts Senior Center has been serving Christian County since 1970. In time the organization has developed into a focal point for aging services in Christian County and the immediate region. The Board and management decided to initiate an annual fund campaign as a response to government revenue cuts and cost increases in labor and food that have strained the financial resources of the organization.

“The success of the Annual Fund campaign is a testament that our community is comprised of generous individuals and businesses that place responsibility to care for others and charity as God’s will for their lives,” said Jose Quinonez, Executive Director of the A.W. Watts Senior Center. “We serve everyone that walks through our doors and we work very hard to not place participants on a waiting list for a Meal on Wheels. We strive to be as giving to our participants as the community is to us. We have already thanked all our donors but we wish to publicly recognize our Major Donors to the Annual Fund, which are donors who made gifts or pledges of $1,000 or more. Those donors are: Mary Gray, Bill and Kaye Munday, US Smokeless Tobacco Manufacturing Co., and the Adult Sunday School Class #2 at Flat Lick Cumberland Presbyterian Church.”

The senior center has grown over 50% in participation over the past two years and continues to develop new activities and programs. The center has implemented various community relations and marketing strategies to promote a new image of the senior center. The new image of the center is one that appeals to “Baby Boomers” and active senior adults.

“Our senior center will always be a place for only low-income seniors or homebound senior adults to receive critical services, but we do also provide a wide range of recreational activities for all senior adults,” says Quinonez. “One third of all our senior participants are active participants in our Health and Wellness program - they dance, walk, do aerobics and actively monitor their blood pressure and diabetes. Our monthly senior trips to historic and tourist attractions such as Branson, Las Vegas, and Mt. Rushmore are also very popular and a great way to meet new people.”
