“Record companies treating their customers like the enemy, suing 12-year olds for downloading music... I'm putting an end to all this,” proclaims the Russian-born, Brooklyn-based Doe Deere. In addition to lowering prices on her independently distributed CD ($9.50, includes worldwide shipping) and releasing a ‘green’ edition of her album (downloadable at $5.00) to satisfy the iPod generation, Doe Deere is now reaching out to a previously unexplored group of listeners, which she calls ‘the Young, the Broke, and the Desperate.’ Simply put, she offers her album free of charge to those who simply ask for it.
“These are real fans who need, want, and yearn for new music as much as everyone else. The only difference, they can’t pay for it at the moment,” explains Deere. By offering something to this ‘limbo’ group, she hopes to attract and retain fans who might purchase her merchandise in the future.
Deere trusts her followers not to rip her off and does not object to her album being distributed on P2P networks. ”Those who can afford the record will buy it. Withholding it from the rest is absurd!” she states.
