Connected to India

Connected to India (CtoI), Singapore-headquartered online media company releases its article series on revolutionaries from India’s independence struggle; ‘Know Your Freedom Fighters’. The inaugural series will cover the lives of 12, comparatively lesser known heroes of India’s freedom struggle against the British rule.

This is an attempt to create brief accounts of these exceptionally brave, selfless individuals by collecting information from different sources and collating them under an article. Some of these brave hearts have gone comparatively unsung, even though they paid the ultimate price; with their lives.

Founder and CEO of Connected to India, Himanshu Verma said, “In our research for the series we stumbled upon accounts of incredible bravery, ingenuity, determination and some very enthralling side activities our independence heroes were involved in. Like the revelation that the Late Udham Singh, an NRI freedom fighter, who while planning the assassination of Michael O’Dwyer, former Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab who ordered Jallianwala Bagh massacre was living in London and acting as an extra in English movies.

“Know your freedom fighter series will also acquaint the second generation of the Indian diaspora about the great freedom struggle and its heroes,” Himanshu added.

In one of the heart touching songs from a Hindi film ‘Shaheed’ (martyr) made in 1965 freedom fighters of the country request countrymen that they should not forget them when they celebrate Independence Day.

Jab shaheedon ki arthi uthe dhoom se,
Deshwalon tum aanso bahana nahin,
Par manao jab azad Bharat ka din,
Us ghari tum haemin bhul jana nahin
Laut kar aa sake na jahan mein to kya
Yaad ban kar dilon mein to aa jayeinge

(When the funeral of martyrs is taken out with fanfare,
Countrymen, you should not shed tears,
But promise that when you celebrate India’s independence day
At that time, you should not forget us
Though we cannot return to this world
But we will return as memories to your hearts)

Incidentally, some songs of ‘Shaheed’ were penned by another great freedom fighter and acknowledged Hindi and Urdu poet, Ram Prasad Bismil. ‘Sarfaroshi Ki Tammna’, a tribute to the young freedom fighters of India’s revolutionary movement, being one of his famous poems, also featured in the same movie.

Twelve freedom fighters covered in the series include Udham Singh, Madan Lal Dhingra, Madam Cama, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, Rajguru, Batukeshwar Dutt, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Khudi Ram Bose, Mangal Pandey, Rani Laxmi Bai and Bal Gangadhar Tilak.

In addition to covering accounts of their lives articles will provide information on the memorials, museums, if any built in memory of these iconic legends and how can people visit those.
The first article of the series is on Udham Singh who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre by killing Michael O’Dwyer, former Lieutenant-Governor of the Punjab right in the capital of British Empire London at Caxton Hall. Udham Singh was a multifarious person and adept in different professions. He was a painter, mechanic, carpenter and even a film actor. Sir Alexander Korda, a Hungarian-born British film producer, and director, films Udham Singh worked in included ‘Elephant Boy’ and ‘Four Feathers’.

Sukhdev Thapar, one of other heroes covered in the series, was known for his perseverance right from his childhood and named himself ‘Markhaana’ meaning one born for being beaten by others and took all the blows and elbows of army men. Once, he poured nitric acid over his left arm to remove "Om" tattooed thereon. He did this to test his endurance. To remove the remaining marks, he hung his festering wounds over a candle flame.
