FREMDE ERDE - Festival of Outcast Music - Vienna, April 12-29, 2026

The festival will open on April 12 at the Volkstheater with the ceremony _"Democracy Needs Contradiction"_. The keynote address will be delivered by the German-French journalist Michel Friedman. The opening will also feature the world premiere of a work by Hans Winterberg, whose 125th birthday will be commemorated in 2026.
The program combines concerts, literature, and film, bringing numerous rarely performed works as well as several premieres and world premieres to Vienna. Highlights include:
- the concert "Immortality" featuring musicians from the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra (April 16)
- Hanns Eisler's "Hollywood Songbook" with baritone Guenter Haumer (April 18)
- an evening dedicated to ostracized female composers with a reading by Ruth Cerha (April 23)
- a cabaret program on Jewish cabaret of the interwar period (April 24)
- the closing concert featuring the Polish Radio Orchestra Warsaw under Micha? Nesterowicz, with works by W?adys?aw Szpilman, Alexander Zemlinsky, and Mieczys?aw Weinberg (April 29)
The supporting program also includes a film premiere of the opera "Fremde Erde" by Karol Rathaus, workshops with Thomas Hampson, and an exhibition marking the anniversary of the Exilarte Center at the mdw.
The festival is organized in cooperation with the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute for Holocaust Studies, the Jewish Community of Vienna, PEN Austria, Neubau erinnert, and the Exilarte Center of the mdw - University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.
