Tuolumne County Resident and Tribal Elder Barbara Persson Shares Decades of Local History in New Documentary Interview
The episode is hosted by U.S. Army Sergeant Aaron Rasmussen, an Iraqi War veteran, and U.S. Army Sergeant Marv Pierce, an Afghanistan War veteran. Together, they guide Persson through a life story that spans from her childhood near the historic lumber mills to her enduring impact on local sports and community traditions.Born in 1935, Persson provides a vivid account of growing up "across the pond" from the historic West Side Lumber Company mill. Her recollections serve as a living record of a bygone era, describing the sounds of logging trains and the sight of workers navigating floating logs-a stark contrast to the modern landscape of the region.
The interview highlights several of Persson's significant contributions to the community, including:
The Origins of Standard Park: Persson recounts how she and three other women approached local landowner Mr. Merlo in 1958 to convert a cattle field into a softball diamond, which laid the groundwork for what is now Standard Park.
A Trailblazer in Sports: After being expelled from high school, Persson found her stride in athletics. Despite an initial reluctance to play, she became a professional bowling instructor and was inducted into the Hall of Fame for both bowling and horseshoes.
Tribal Heritage: As an elder of the Tuolumne Band of Me-Wuk Indians, Persson discusses her family lineage and the history of tribal relations within the county.
Community Dedication: A fixture at the annual Tuolumne Jubilee since its inception in 1935, Persson served as the honorary Jubilee Queen in 2003 and spent decades organizing children's programs and community events.
"I've lived here all my life," Persson noted during the interview. "This is my little town." Her stories provide invaluable context for the cultural and industrial shifts that have shaped Tuolumne County, from the operation of the box factories to the transformation of the town's main street.
The full interview is now available for viewing on the Tuolumne Legends YouTube channel, preserving these vital stories for future generations.
