Something Divine follows Ray "Raghunath" Cappo, the influential frontman of the straightedge band Youth of Today, who, at the height of his music career, left the stage to embark on a spiritual quest in India. His journey bridges two seemingly opposing worlds- punk and ancient spirituality-revealing a story of transformation, self-discovery, and connection across cultures.
Essig first joined Cappo on pilgrimage to India in 2017, an experience that deeply shaped his own spiritual and creative path. Featuring appearances by Moby, John "Porcell" Porcelly, Keli Lalita Reddy, Sammy Siegler, and Madhava Naidoo, the film captures a powerful blend of music, devotion, and humanity.
"Something Divine is more than a film-it's a journey into the heart of transformation. Through music, faith, and the search for truth, it reveals how two very different worlds can collide and create something profoundly human," comments Essig. The film has earned widespread recognition, including the Telly Award for Feature Documentary, Award of Excellence at Impact DOCS, Best Music Feature Film at the Ayodhya Film Festival in India, and honors at the World Music and International Film Festival and Accolade Global Awards. The film was also nominated at many festivals including Lonely Seal Film Festival, Thin Line Festival, and the DaVinci Film Festival, among others.
Thomas Essig is an American film producer, musician, audio engineer, and actor. A native of Staten Island, NY, and longtime member of the Pittsburgh creative community, Essig founded SSYY Productions Inc. in 2017. His credits include the feature Go/Don't Go (Executive Producer), award-winning short Through the Stars (Co-Executive Producer), and the upcoming The Monte Carlo (2026). His debut feature Something Divine marks a significant milestone in his filmmaking career. Essig is currently developing his newest project, I'm the Drummer, a true story written by him, inspired by his life of incredible circumstances, and the resiliency of the human spirit.
Ray "Raghunath" Cappo rose to prominence as the founder of the pioneering punk band Youth of Today, advocating clean living and conscious living through straightedge culture. After his transformative experiences in India, he formed Shelter, merging punk energy with spiritual insight. Today, Cappo leads retreats at Supersoul Farm in upstate New York and co-hosts the top-ranked spirituality podcast Wisdom of the Sages. His bestselling memoir, From Punk to Monk: The Spiritual Journey of Ray Raghunath Cappo, chronicles the life behind the film.
