Willemstad, Curaçao - February 2026 - St. Martinus University Faculty of Medicine (SMUFOM) has announced the appointment of Dr. Haranath Policherla, MD, as Chairman of the Board of Governors. Dr. Policherla is a U.S.-based neurologist and healthcare executive whose career spans more than three decades of clinical practice, physician leadership, and medical education engagement.

The decision was approved by the University's Board of Directors in consultation with Chancellor Dr. Murali Chand Ginjupalli, PhD, reflecting the institution's ongoing efforts to strengthen governance structures, enhance academic oversight, and further expand collaboration with healthcare systems in the United States.

Dr. Policherla's appointment comes as St. Martinus University continues to build upon its twenty-five year history of training physicians for international healthcare systems. His experience within major American hospital networks and academic environments is expected to contribute to the university's continued academic development and clinical partnerships.

Professional Background

Dr. Policherla currently practices neurology in Michigan and has maintained an active role in patient care and clinical leadership throughout his career. He earned his medical degree from Sri Venkatesvara Medical College under NTR University of Health Sciences in India and later completed his Neurology residency at Detroit Medical Center through Wayne State University School of Medicine.

He maintains affiliations with several leading healthcare institutions in Michigan, including Corewell Health Beaumont Grosse Pointe Hospital, Henry Ford St. John Hospital, and DMC Harper University Hospital.

His professional credentials include board certification in Neurology through the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, along with additional certifications in Clinical Neurophysiology and Sleep Medicine. Over the course of his career, he has been involved in advancing neurological care, supporting interdisciplinary medical teams, and contributing to physician training initiatives. His approach to healthcare leadership emphasizes strong clinical standards, transparent governance, regulatory compliance, and evidence-based medical education.

Leadership Role at SMUFOM

In his role as Chairman of the Board of Governors, Dr. Policherla will provide guidance on institutional strategy, governance policies, and academic quality initiatives. His responsibilities will include supporting long-term institutional planning while ensuring that educational standards align with expectations of international medical regulators and U.S. healthcare systems.

The Board of Governors works closely with university leadership to oversee academic performance, accreditation readiness, and program development. Dr. Policherla's clinical background and governance experience are expected to reinforce the university's focus on preparing graduates for licensure examinations and residency training.

Advancing Clinical Collaboration

Dr. Policherla's appointment also strengthens St. Martinus University's engagement with healthcare institutions across the United States. His longstanding professional relationships within hospital networks are expected to support continued collaboration with Prime Healthcare Services, one of the country's largest hospital systems, which operates 54 hospitals across 15 states and employs more than 60,000 healthcare professionals.

These relationships create opportunities for expanded clinical exposure and training environments that allow students to develop practical experience within accredited American hospitals. Strengthening these partnerships remains a key priority for the university as it prepares graduates for residency placements and medical practice.

Institutional Growth and Visibility

The appointment of a physician with extensive experience in the U.S. healthcare system reflects the university's continued focus on strengthening its academic profile and global recognition. Dr. Policherla's reputation as a clinician and healthcare leader adds further credibility to the university's governance structure and strategic direction.
