BL!XT and Vattenfall Sign Commercial Agreement to Strengthen Grid Resilience and Flexibility in Sweden

- BL!XT and Vattenfall Eldistribution have entered into a commercial agreement to deploy software defined switch gear that will strengthen grid resilience and enable flexible energy management in the Swedish distribution grid. The agreement builds on the groundbreaking microgrid initiative on the island of Arholma in the Stockholm archipelago and represents a key step toward scaling innovative solutions for future electricity networks.

As electrification accelerates and electricity demand grows, distribution system operators face increasing challenges related to grid capacity, resilience, and the integration of distributed energy resources. Traditional grid infrastructure relies on mechanical switching equipment that limits visibility and real-time control.
Through this collaboration, BL!XT and Vattenfall are introducing digital, software-defined power control that enables grid operators to monitor, protect, and dynamically manage electricity flows at the edge of the distribution network.

The collaboration combines Vattenfall's pioneering work in resilient microgrids with BL!XT's software defined switch gear technology to enable real-time control of loads, enhanced monitoring, and automated responses to disturbances. BL!XT's switches enable grid operators to monitor and control individual loads in real time, shedding or sequencing demand within milliseconds to stabilize local grids during disturbances or islanded operation.

The commercial agreement builds on the innovative microgrid installed on Arholma, where Vattenfall has developed one of Europe's most advanced resilient energy systems. The microgrid integrates solar generation, battery storage, and advanced grid control software, enabling the island to operate independently from the mainland grid during outages.

In the next phase of the project, customer-side flexibility can be integrated directly into grid operations. Heating systems such as electric heating and boilers can temporarily reduce demand when the grid is under stress, allowing the microgrid to maintain stable operation while reducing the need for additional infrastructure or battery capacity.

BL!XT's programmable power platform enables this new level of grid control. The company's technology provides granular, real-time measurements of current, voltage, and frequency while enabling automated protection and dynamic load management.

This allows grid operators to:
• control individual loads in real time
• sequence restarts after outages
• prevent congestion caused by local generation or demand spikes
• stabilize microgrids during islanded operation

By enabling real-time monitoring, protection, and control at the edge of the grid, the technology creates a programmable control layer for modern electricity networks.

Together, the partners are demonstrating how intelligent grid control, customer flexibility, and advanced grid software can enable a new generation of resilient electricity networks.

The agreement between BL!XT and Vattenfall represents an important milestone in bringing these innovations from pilot projects into commercial deployment-helping build a smarter, more adaptive grid capable of supporting the energy transition.
