GatherUK.org was born out of necessity

As the global giant Meetup.com faces a massive backlash from UK organisers over huge price hikes and new "pay-to-play" features, a new British challenger has arrived. GatherUK.org, a non-profit community platform, has officially launched to give local groups a friendly, feature-packed home without the "Big Tech" price tag.

Since being bought by the company Bending Spoons, Meetup has pushed up subscription costs for UK organisers, with some seeing their bills double or even triple almost overnight. For many local walking groups, book clubs, and mental health support circles, these costs have become a "tax on friendship," forcing many much-loved communities to shut down for good.

"GatherUK.org was built because we had to do something," says Steve Podbury, Founder. "We were watching brilliant local groups across the UK closing their doors because they just couldn't justify the monthly 'organiser tax.' As a non-profit, we don't have shareholders to keep happy-our only job is to keep the UK's social life alive by making it easy and affordable for people to get together."

GatherUK.org isn't just a cheaper version of what's already out there; it's a platform built specifically for the UK. While US-based apps often treat Britain as an afterthought, GatherUK is designed from the ground up to serve our local towns and cities. This means everything from better local search results to making sure your data is handled properly under UK privacy laws.

One of the biggest wins for organisers is that GatherUK offers the "pro" tools for free. Things like managing RSVPs, setting up waitlists, and chatting with your members are all built-in. There are no sneaky paywalls or features hidden behind expensive subscriptions. Whether you're running a small weekly coffee morning or a massive city-wide networking event, you get the same top-tier tools to help your group thrive.

The platform is now open for business, and Steve is inviting UK organisers to bring their groups over and help build a community that is actually owned by the people who use it. By taking the profit motive out of the equation, GatherUK.org ensures that the future of British communities stays in the hands of the people who create them.
