Tokyo, Japan, 2026: SDKI Analytics' research indicates that Japan's semiconductor materials market is entering a new phase of growth. The expansion is driven by large-scale government investment, advanced-node ambitions, and by the rapid domestic capacity expansion.

SDKI estimates that the semiconductor materials market is projected to expand at a CAGR of 5% from 2025 to 2037, fueled by accelerating logic and memory IC production as well as the policy support. Japan's government has committed substantial funding to rebuild semiconductor competitiveness and supply chain resilience. Under the AI & Semiconductor Industry Base Strengthening Framework, public and private mobilization is projected to exceed ¥10 trillion through FY2030.

In addition, certified production facility programs under METI have approved up to ¥476.0 billion for JASM (TSMC's Japan JV) and up to ¥732.0 billion for a second Kumamoto fab. METI also plans to invest ¥100 billion (FY2025 initial budget) into Rapidus to support next-generation logic manufacturing.

These initiatives are expanding demand for semiconductor-grade materials including silicon wafers, SiC substrates, photoresists, specialty gases, and ultra-high-purity chemicals such as ultra-pure sulfuric acid.

"Capacity expansion is the key inflection point for materials. Once fabs are funded and scheduled, the demand shifts from interest to contracted qualification," said an SDKI semiconductor analyst. "This will be especially evident in wafers, photoresists, specialty gases, and high-purity inputs."

As advanced-node ambitions accelerate toward 2-nm manufacturing, materials intensity per wafer is increasing. The shrinking geometries require tighter defect control, higher chemical purity, and improved process stability. Moreover, the trend of shrinking geometries will create both higher value per wafer and stricter supplier qualification requirements.
