Rising Global Burden of Oral Diseases Driving Dental Implants Demand

The rise in the prevalence of dental disorders and oral diseases is the major factor propelling the growth of the global dental implants market. An increase in the number of individuals suffering from dental disorders such as tooth decay, periodontal disease, dental trauma, and tooth loss due to age is anticipated to drive the demand for restorative dentistry. The 2024 Oral Health Surveillance Report published by CDC Oral Health estimates that nearly 21% of adults ages 20 to 64 experience untreated dental caries in one or more permanent teeth, and large population of unmet need exists.

According to the World Health Organization, oral diseases affect up to 3.5 billion people worldwide. About 2 billion have caries in their permanent teeth, and 514 million children have caries in their primary teeth. Dental implants are the most viable long term solution for missing teeth. They are functionally, cosmetically and psychologically superior to removable dentures and fixed bridges. They have been shown to be an efficacious means to restore oral function and quality of life, and to maintain the alveolar bone via osseointegration. Removable dentures can lead to discomfort, interfere with speech, and resorb the surrounding bone, whereas dental implants are a permanent solution which look and function like natural teeth.

Aging Population and Expanding Clinical Applications Supporting Market Growth

With an aging population worldwide, more edentulous patients are seeking implant therapy for universal functions and aesthetics. The number of adults aged 60 years and over in the world is expected to increase from 1 billion in 2020 to 2.1 billion in 2050, with increasing proportions of older adults with missing teeth in need of permanent replacement with dental implants. With advances in implant materials and surgical techniques, the success rates for dental implants are now better than 95%.

Patient acceptance of this technology ensures that implant placement is increasingly prescribed by hospitals, specialist dental clinics, and implantology units for the treatment and functional rehabilitation of their patients. The need for dental implants is well grounded in restorative dentistry for a wide variety of clinical situations: single tooth replacement, multiple tooth replacement, full arch reconstruction and implant retained dentures. Due to increased awareness of oral health and clinical evidence supporting long term success of implant therapy, dental implant products have strong demand worldwide.

Advanced Implant Materials and Surface Technologies Enhancing Clinical Outcomes

Technological advancements of implant materials, design and surgical techniques are also a key driver of market growth, helping to improve clinical outcomes and expand the procedure's reach. Implant surface treatments such as sandblasted and acid-etched (SLA) surfaces, nano-textured surfaces and bioactive coatings have enabled improved osseointegration quality and speed, reduced healing times and increased implant longevity. Nano-textured implant surfaces are implant surfaces with nanoscale features similar to natural bone tissue. The presence of nanometer scale surface properties eases osteoblast cell adhesion, growth and differentiation, allowing for accelerated and more predictable integration. Advanced surface technologies such as SLActive surfaces have reduced healing times and removed the need for delayed loading of the implant. This has reduced the overall treatment time for the patient.

Digital Dentistry and CAD/CAM Innovations Transforming Implant Procedures

An emerging area is the use of zirconia (zirconium dioxide) implants, metal-free ceramics that are best used in those who have metal allergies or in the front of the mouth for cosmetic reasons; these have good biocompatibility and appearance. Today the titanium market share is 92.7%. Due to its long clinical history, favorable mechanical properties of titanium, and wide-ranging clinical data, titanium has been established as the standard material. However, zirconia implant systems have rapidly grown in Europe and North America, where aesthetic dentistry is in high demand.
Technological advances in digital dentistry, including computer-helped design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM), cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) imaging, intraoral scanning and 3D printing, have transformed implant treatment planning and implant surgery. These digital workflows improve implant treatment planning by enabling accurate implant positioning, angulation and depth to be achieved virtually and computer guided implant surgery to be performed using surgical guides, which improves accuracy and reduces surgical complications.

Growing Focus on Aesthetic Dentistry, Dental Tourism, and Insurance Support Boosting Adoption

An increased awareness of aesthetic dentistry and the growing social acceptance for improved appearance are changing the dental implants market by forcing patients' demands to go beyond the functional restoration aspect. The modern consumer considers dental health an important contributor to one's physical appearance, self-esteem and social interaction. Cosmetic aspects are therefore becoming as important for patients as functional aspects. With the rise of social media, celebrity culture, and digital photography, people have become increasingly concerned with how their smile looks in pictures, video calls and in person.

Implants can provide the best aesthetic outcome as they both emerge through the gingiva in the same way as natural teeth do, and the correctly contoured crowns will not show any metal margins. Implants prevent the face from collapsing and looking prematurely aged. There are both functional and aesthetic reasons for those requiring implant treatment to pursue it. Preservation of the alveolar bone and symmetry of the patient's face is an important aspect of quality of life and due to increases in disposable income in emerging markets, patients can afford elective dentistry. Historically implant surgery represented a meaningful investment, but this is changing due to finance, dental tourism and insurance. Dental tourism has been a major driver of market growth, with patients seeking implant dentistry treatment traveling to Mexico, Costa Rica, Hungary, Poland, India, and Thailand. These offer dental implant treatment of an internationally competitive standard at vastly reduced prices in comparison to domestic markets.

Facilities with quality dental services, internationally trained dentists, advanced technology and treatment packages including travel arrangements are marketed. The coverage and reimbursement provided by dental insurance in some markets presents no barrier to the wide adoption of implants, while government initiatives to improve oral health and access to dental care have supported this. Government support is another factor in implant uptake. For example, in September 2024, a study funded by the National Library of Medicine found that improving dental insurance for the elderly population in South Korea led to a 60.5% increase in the percentage of Korean adults aged 65 and over who received dental implants.

Education and marketing by manufacturers, professional organizations and individual dentists have greatly increased patients' awareness of the value of implants and reduced the lack of knowledge about the procedure, healing time, and longevity. Acceptance of dental implants as a mainstream treatment instead of an elective procedure has greatly expanded the market. This change in consumer attitudes and increased spending on appearance represents important long-term growth opportunities for the Company as dental implants become the standard of care in tooth replacement versus an elective premium procedure.
