Your private home address online - a risk for entrepreneurs?
Duesseldorf, February 14, 2026 - While companies protect every detail of their customer data, many entrepreneurs permanently publish their own home addresses on the internet. When registering a company, the name and address must be disclosed. For sole traders and managing directors of small companies, this often means that their private residence officially becomes their business address - visible in the imprint, documented in the commercial register, and searchable in the long term via search engines and register portals.
The legal implications of this requirement are often underestimated. Once published, the address remains part of the entrepreneur's digital identity. Even years later, it is still possible to trace the address at which a company was founded. In times of growing sensitivity to data protection and digital privacy, many founders are therefore faced with a fundamental question: How much personal information is necessary - and how much is strategically sensible?
"We are observing that founders today are addressing this issue much earlier," says Marco Nagel, managing director of dusBASE GmbH in Duesseldorf. "The publication of one's home address is no longer automatically accepted. Many want to position their company professionally without permanently making their private space public."
This development is particularly relevant against the backdrop of changing work models. Numerous start-ups are being created in home offices, digitally and independently of location. A traditional office is not essential for many business models. At the same time, commercial rents in urban locations continue to rise. In this constellation, external business addresses are becoming increasingly important - as a way of separating transparency requirements and privacy.
In addition to data protection issues, practical aspects also play a role. Some landlords prohibit the commercial use of residential space. In addition, a private address in a business context can raise questions about the structural setup of a company among banks or larger business partners. Observations from the Duesseldorf market show a clear change in awareness. The business address is no longer seen as a formal obligation, but as a strategic decision with implications for public image, professionalism, and personal security. Transparency remains a legal requirement. However, how this is implemented organizationally is part of corporate design. For a growing number of founders, this means thinking of their place of residence and company headquarters as separate from the outset - as an expression of a professional self-image in a digitally visible world.
