Iconic War Horse Sculpture by Damian O'Connor Offered at Auction

A monumental horse sculpture created by acclaimed British artist Damian O'Connor is to be offered for sale at auction on Valentines day 14 February at Mander Auctioneers, Sudbury, Suffolk.

Standing over 10 feet tall, 10 feet long, mounted on a four-wheeled trailer and weighing close to a ton, the sculpture is a powerful tribute to the heavy horse and its central role in human history. For thousands of years, such horses worked alongside mankind in war, agriculture, transport and trade, shaping civilisation long before mechanisation replaced muscle and endurance.

O'Connor, a prolific artist with more than five decades of exhibitions and international sales, created the sculpture to express strength, freedom and the raw physical power that defined the pre-industrial world. The horse is intentionally greater than life-size, emphasising both its might and its quiet dignity.

Since its creation, the sculpture has taken on a life beyond the studio. Appearing unexpectedly at night on major roundabouts around Norfolk, it has become an unofficial landmark. Its silent presence has delighted children, intrigued motorists and earned the quiet approval of local authorities, including police. These nocturnal appearances reinforced the sculpture's untamed character, reflecting both the roaming spirit of the horse and Norfolk's long-standing relationship with rebellion, independence and open land.

The sculpture has never been named, by design. O'Connor chose to leave its identity open, allowing each viewer to attach their own meaning and emotional response. In doing so, the horse has become a shared symbol rather than a fixed narrative.

Now retiring due to health reasons, O'Connor is offering the sculpture to new ownership for the first time.
