Leipzig - New Construction, Renovation, and Decay
The eBook Leipzig - New Construction, Renovation, and Decay documents in words and pictures the profound urban changes in the city of Leipzig between 2004 and 2025. The work is now in its 8th edition and has established itself as a continuous chronicle of Leipzig's transformation. Over more than two decades, developments have been recorded that have significantly shaped the city's appearance today. The starting point for many of the measures described is the "Stadtumbau Ost" (Urban Redevelopment East) program, which was adopted in 2002. The aim of this extensive support program was to respond to the consequences of population decline, vacancy rates, and structural change. In Leipzig, targeted projects were then implemented that contributed to a sustainable improvement in the quality of work, housing, and life. Numerous renovations of historic buildings, the demolition of buildings that were no longer needed, and urban redevelopment have upgraded entire neighborhoods. Most of these projects have now been completed, while others are still in the planning or implementation phase. These include the ongoing expansion of Leipzig's waterfront landscape, the future development of the area behind the Bayerischer Bahnhof railway station, and the construction of the new Eutritzsch district center. These projects will continue to influence urban development for years to come and set new trends.
As the title makes clear, urban renewal encompasses new buildings, extensive renovations, and measures to secure and revitalize dilapidated industrial and brownfield sites. Particularly impressive is the approach to 19th-century industrial architecture, much of which has been preserved, carefully restored, and put to new uses.
The eBook offers visitors and Leipzig residents alike a well-founded overview of the "new old Leipzig" and paints a multi-layered picture of the city's recent history.
It is available for download via Amazon and all bookstores.
