The performance advantages of USB4 cables stem from several key technological breakthroughs. Its physical layer employs a dual simplex differential channel architecture, the same as Thunderbolt 3, aggregating the bandwidth of two independent channels through dual-channel bonding technology. Combined with PAM-3 modulation and coding and 128b/132b encoding technology, this effectively improves data throughput per unit time, achieving transmission rates of 20Gbps or 40Gbps. The 40Gbps version has twice the effective bandwidth of a USB 3.2 Gen 2x2 cable. Even more innovative is its dynamic bandwidth allocation mechanism. Through time-division multiplexing and tunneling encapsulation technology, PCIe, DisplayPort, and USB protocols can coexist and transmit on a shared physical link. The system can adjust the bandwidth allocation of each protocol channel according to real-time needs; for example, it automatically reduces video stream bandwidth allocation when transferring large files, maximizing the utilization of link resources. In terms of power delivery, the new generation of USB4 cables supports the PD3.1 Extended Power Range (EPR) specification, providing a maximum power output of 240W (48V/5A), a significant increase from the previous generation's 100W limit. This allows for high-speed charging of high-power devices such as the MacBook Pro; for example, a 16-inch MacBook Pro can be charged from 0% to 60% in just 30 minutes. Video transmission capabilities are also outstanding, supporting single-channel 8K@60Hz, 4K@144Hz, or dual-channel 4K@60Hz high-definition display output, meeting the needs of professional audio-visual and multi-screen office work.
Types
Based on differences in structural design and application scenarios, USB4 cables are mainly divided into two categories: passive and active. Passive cables have a relatively simple structure, requiring no built-in electronic components, but their length is limited by signal attenuation, reaching a maximum of only 0.8 to 1 meter when supporting 40Gbps speeds, making them suitable for short-distance device connections. Active cables incorporate repeater components such as re-drivers or re-timers, using Rx Equalizers to compensate for signal loss and Output Drivers to adjust signal strength. This extends transmission distances to within 5 meters and requires support for full USB 3.2 speeds, USB 4 dual-channel, and TBT3 Alt-Mode, meeting the medium-to-long-distance high-speed transmission needs of large external screens and VR devices. Additionally, there are Optical Insulated Cables (OIACs) for industrial applications, reaching lengths of up to 50 meters. While currently primarily supporting USB 3.2 Gen2 speeds and incompatible with USB 2.0 and power delivery, they offer unique applications in machine vision, remote sensors, and medical equipment. It's worth noting that some active cables, such as LRD (Linear Re-Driver) cables, are declared as passive cables in eMarker for compatibility with existing Thunderbolt 3 products, but actually possess the ability to actively enhance signal strength.
