Harm of Cyanobacteria in Water - Industry Trends and Best

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are among the most primitive types of algae. They are unicellular prokaryotes that possess both algal and fungal characteristics. Cyanobacteria thrive in water bodies rich in organic matter and with a relatively high pH value, and they favor high temperatures. They can reproduce in large quantities when the water pH ranges from 8 to 9.5 and the temperature is between 28 degrees C and 35 degrees C. In addition, they have strong adaptability and rapid reproductive capacity.

Cyanobacteria can affect the growth rate of aquatic animals and cause them to suffer from alkalosis. On extremely sunny days, fry or shrimp larvae may develop gas bubble disease and die subsequently. When cyanobacteria die, they will deteriorate the water quality, leading to water heating and foul odors. Therefore, to keep abreast of the cyanobacteria conditions in a timely manner, cyanobacteria transmitters are widely adopted for real-time monitoring of cyanobacteria growth in water, whether it is for aquaculture, drinking water sources, or other water quality management scenarios.

There are two main methods for cyanobacteria monitoring [https://www.tjtytech.com/water-quality-environmental-monitoring-instrument/]: the counting method and the fluorescence method. The counting method is time-consuming and unable to provide real-time data, making it difficult to track dynamic changes in water bodies. Thus, it is only suitable for laboratory measurements. In contrast, the fluorescence method can capture real-time water data, which enables the online monitoring of cyanobacteria.

The cyanobacteria analyzer produced by Wisens adopts the fluorescence method principle. Leveraging the characteristic that cyanobacteria have absorption peaks and emission peaks in the spectrum, it emits monochromatic light at the spectral absorption peak of cyanobacteria to irradiate the water. The cyanobacteria in the water absorb the energy of the monochromatic light and then emit monochromatic light at another wavelength corresponding to the emission peak. The light intensity emitted by cyanobacteria is directly proportional to the cyanobacteria content in the water. Compared with the traditional manual counting method, this cyanobacteria analyzer is more efficient and faster, and supports online real-time monitoring. It can maintain excellent stability even during long-term online operation and can provide early warning of algal reproduction.

But a student-led venture called CynoFilter is proving that the fight against emissions may not depend solely on large-scale infrastructure. Instead, the answer might lie in compact, nature-inspired systems designed to make carbon capture accessible to communities everywhere. The CynoFilter project has recently secured a
