How did your background and experience influence your writing?

My background shaped Prince of Typgar in ways both deliberate and unexpected. Although I spent most of my professional life in medicine and cardiology, storytelling was always part of who I was. I grew up immersed in Indian epics, stories rich with moral complexity, flawed heroes, and spiritual inquiry, and those early influences never left me. Later, as a father raising two sons, I rediscovered the joy of storytelling through the books we read together, from classic fantasies to modern young adult novels. That shared experience reignited my desire to create stories of my own.

As an Indian-American writer, I was also motivated to bring greater cultural depth and representation into the fantasy genre. I wanted to build an alternate universe populated by diverse characters, mythic traditions, and moral questions that reflect the richness of the world we live in. My love for magical realism, shaped by writers like Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Salman Rushdie, and Mikhail Bulgakov, deeply influenced the tone and texture of the trilogy, blending wonder with realism and imagination with consequence.

Writing fiction came later in life, but that timing felt right. Years spent in medicine taught me discipline, observation, and empathy, all essential tools for storytelling. Much of Prince of Typgar was written while traveling for work, often at 35,000 feet, where the solitude of an airplane cabin became an unexpected creative sanctuary. In many ways, the trilogy reflects my own journey: a blend of science and imagination, structure and wonder, discipline and play, proof that it's never too late to tell the stories that have been waiting inside you.
