Broadband Innovation and Regional Development
After a controversial two day discussion an agreement was made on Tuesday. Regional developers from the Netherlands, Denmark, Belgium, Sweden, Norway and Germany came to definition that includes several stages. After a cooperation for two years the working group decided unanimously that the medium-term needs are 10 - 100 Mbit/s while currently 2 Mbit/s are still acceptable. On the long run, according to current trends, the development of broadband services and the modifications in the labour market and health care in Europe, there will be a change. The primary users are expected in rural areas, because the health care there will only be possible with technical assistance. The working group is now working out recommendations and guidelines for the nations and regions in Europe. "We must not panic now, but make plans in a long-term", says Tim Brauckmüller lead project manager for the Interreg IIIB North Sea Region-Project BIRD.
