New Book by Journalist Eladio Rodulfo González Exposes the Systemic Repression of Political Prisoners in Venezuela
NUEVA ESPARTA, VENEZUELA - Journalist and researcher Eladio Rodulfo González announces the release of his latest book, Political Prisoners of Venezuela's dictator NICOLAS MADURO. Published by the Centro de Investigaciones Culturales del Estado Nueva Esparta (CICUNE), this comprehensive work provides a harrowing look at the human rights crisis in Venezuela, detailing the arbitrary detentions, torture, and judicial manipulation used to suppress dissent under the current regime. In Political Prisoners of Venezuela's dictator NICOLAS MADURO, González documents the staggering scale of political persecution. Between 2014 and 2021, an estimated 15,769 people were detained for political reasons in the country. The book highlights the plight of over 238 current political prisoners and more than 9,000 individuals who, while released from prison, remain subject to restrictive "personal coercion" measures that limit their freedom.
The narrative brings to light specific, high-profile cases of injustice, including:
• Lieutenant Colonel Igbert Marín Chaparro: Imprisoned since 2018, he famously launched a hunger strike to protest the "cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment" in the DGCIM's "House of Dreams" (Casa de los Sueños).
• Roland Carreño: A renowned journalist and political activist whose arbitrary detention and subsequent charges have been widely condemned by human rights organizations.
• Indigenous Victims: The tragic case of Salvador Franco, a Pemón indigenous prisoner who died in state custody due to a lack of medical attention, and the 12 other Pemón individuals subjected to irregular judicial processes.
• Military and Civil Servants: Detailed accounts of the imprisonment of figures like General Ovidio Poggioli, Deputy Edgar Zambrano, and nurse Ada Macuare.
"Political prisoners are victims of a merciless state," the book notes, describing a judicial system that functions as an instrument of official intolerance rather than a guarantor of the law. Rodulfo González examines the "judicial extortion" used to force innocent detainees to plead guilty to crimes such as terrorism and treason.
About the Author: Eladio Rodulfo González (born February 18, 1935) is a distinguished Venezuelan journalist with a degree from the Central University of Venezuela. A social worker, poet, and cultural researcher, Rodulfo González has dedicated his career to documenting the social and political fabric of Venezuela.
