Xenon is a rare gas belonging to the noble gas family. It occurs naturally in multiple isotopes, each containing a different number of neutrons in its nucleus but all with the same number of protons (atomic number 54). This report focuses on xenon-129, xenon-131, and xenon-124.
China, the United States, Russia, Germany, and France are the world's major xenon producers. These countries possess sophisticated extraction and refining technologies for rare gases (such as xenon, krypton, and neon) and hold a key position in the global supply chain. High-purity xenon (greater than or equal to 99.999%) is primarily used in the semiconductor, aerospace, medical (such as anesthetics), and scientific research (such as particle detectors). These countries dominate the high-purity xenon market thanks to their large-scale air separation units (ASUs) and rare gas purification technologies. China has experienced rapid development in the rare gas sector in recent years, gradually reducing its reliance on imports and becoming a major supplier.
Xenon-129 can be used for hyperpolarized lung imaging, significantly improving the resolution of lung imaging. Xenon-129 can be used for hyperpolarized lung magnetic resonance imaging. The total market for xenon-129 grew rapidly during the COVID-19 pandemic, but has declined since then. Xenon-131 is a radioactive isotope that undergoes beta decay. It is commonly used in radiotracers, tumor therapy, and the development of radiopharmaceuticals. Due to its radioactive properties, xenon-131 is also used in medical radiotherapy and related research. Xenon-131 is primarily used in nuclear magnetic gyroscopes. Xenon-124 is a radioactive isotope with a long half-life and is commonly used as a tracer in nuclear physics and astrophysics. Iodine-125 produced from xenon-124 as a precursor can be used in cancer brachytherapy and in vitro radioimmunoassays. Mature products are already available and are commercially available. Iodine-125 is typically produced using xenon-124 (Xe-124) as a target material. Xenon-124 is irradiated with neutrons in a reactor, where it is converted into xenon-125 (Xe-125) through a nuclear reaction. Xenon-125 then decays to form iodine-125 (I-125). During the recycling process, the iodine-125 is captured by an adsorption device and then extracted from the adsorption device through a series of treatments, including elution.
