That night, over a shared bowl of larb and a single, sweating bottle of rice wine, the Mekong Order was born. It was not conceived as a political party or a traditional NGO, but as something more ancient and more elusive: a stewardship. They sought to reclaim a vision of Southeast Asia that existed before the advent of the World Bank's grid-lines-a region where land was a sacred trust, where discovery was a birthright, and where the culinary heritage of the basin was a form of resistance against the homogenization of the modern world.

The "Order," as it has come to be known in the quiet corridors of regional policy circles, operates on the principle that the Mekong is a living spine.
