Enjoying cooking in a solid wood kitchen made from Franconian service tree wood in Jena

The Friedrich family from Jena had already fallen in love with service tree wood--the most valuable wood in Franconia--after seeing the many kitchen photos posted online by M?belmacher. After a tour of the wood warehouse, workshop, and regional show house in Unterkrumbach, they discussed the seven prepared floor plan options with managing director Herwig Danzer.

They decided to remove the wall, thus enlarging the kitchen into the living area, and to install a huge cooking island with space for the family of six and their many friends. During the conversation, a freehand pencil drawing was created that already gave a fairly accurate preview of today's kitchen, but many decisions still had to be made in addition to the choice of Elsbeere wood: The wall cabinets were given a paintable blackboard with a matte black glass front, the sintered ceramic in industrial design became the worktop, and the extractor hood for a 90 cm induction hob, the large teppanyaki grill, and the wok hob had to be 240 cm wide and also black.

Choosing the matching black handles and furniture feet was relatively easy. The Quooker system provides boiling water from the tap along with chilled sparkling water, eliminating the need to carry water and boil the kettle.

But a kitchen is not just about furniture and appliances; the atmosphere is created by the many little details that were gradually discovered while cooking together in the show kitchen. After spending the night in the M?belmacher rooms at the Gr?ner Baum K?hnhofen, these details were discussed again the next day.

The empty wall behind the cooking island is to be decorated with a large tree using the fresco technique, while a wooden blind regulates the light and view from the window facing the street. Artificial light is provided by height-adjustable pendants, with basic lighting provided by a lighting system consisting of rails and panel lights.

A few weeks later, the Friedrich family attended a cooking workshop in Sittenbachtal, where customers, friends, and M?belmacher demonstrated the many possibilities of the Tepan Yaki, especially for large families, and the teaching of cutting techniques for onions, char, and saddle of venison resulted in a few more knife requests. The company was founded in 1988 in Hersbruck near Nuremberg as a holistically oriented furniture manufacturer. In 1997, the newly founded Die M?belmacher GmbH, which now has around 15 employees, moved into the new eco-friendly building in Unterkrumbach, where furniture and kitchens are custom-made from solid wood sourced from the region.
The range is complemented by complete furnishings for kitchens, living rooms, and workspaces, from lighting and upholstered furniture to curtains and even hi-fi systems made from local wood. They have been awarded the Sustainability Prize of the City of Nuremberg, named Bavaria's Environmental Ambassador, won the Thalhofer Prize, and since the 2005 Craftsmanship Prize, they have been ranked among the seven best German craft businesses. In 2010, they won the German Local Sustainability Prize. In 2021 and 2022, they were nominated for the Lammsbr?u Sustainability Award and the German Sustainability Award "Local Hero," and again in 2023 and 2024. In 2023, they won the IGR Innovation Award for Ergonomics, and in 2024, their workshop was named the most beautiful in Germany by the jury of the trade journal DDS.
