UVB rays that reach the skin's surface can cause sunburn. UVB wavelengths generally range from 280nm to 320nm, and medium-wave UVB is the primary cause of sunburn.

UVA rays can reach the dermis, causing tanning and photoaging. UVA wavelengths generally range from 320nm to 400nm. Due to its wide wavelength range, UVA is generally divided into UVA1 and UVA-2. UVA-1 is the primary source of UV radiation at the surface, while UVA-2 has similar physical and biological effects to UVB. Long-wave UVA rays are the primary cause of tanning, collagen damage, skin aging, and the potential for skin cancer. UVA filters include avobenzone/butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane (AVB/BMDBM), diethylaminohydroxybenzoyl hexyl benzoate (DHHB/UVA-Plus), methylene bis-benzotriazolyl tetramethylbutylphenol (MBBT/P-M), and disodium phenyl dibenzimidazole tetrasulfonate (DPDT).

UV filters were originally developed in Europe and the United States to prevent sunburn during tanning. With the increasing awareness of UVA protection and technological advancements, the types of UV filters have continued to expand, and sunscreen products have become increasingly popular in Europe and the United States. Future development trends for UV filters include: (1) covering longer wavelengths through physical and chemical combinations, achieving complementary advantages; and (2) pursuing more efficient and safer sunscreens.
