Mental load at the turn of the year: Why mothers start the new year exhausted

While many people experience the time between Christmas and New Year as calm and decelerated, for many mothers it is the opposite. When structures fall away, routines dissolve and everyone expects to relax at the same time, they experience something that is rarely visible - but has a massive effect: mental load.

Mental load describes the invisible mental work that is necessary to make family, everyday life, butuf and relationships work. Who thinks about the present for the mother-in-law? The allergy(ies) at Christmas dinner? The doctor's appointment in the new year? The daycare start after the vacations? The birthday cards for January? Cooking, washing, cleaning, shopping, bathing the children, and, and, and. These thoughts are constantly running in the background - often with one and the same person, the mother.

Why the turn of the year is an additional burden

Several factors come together between the years: the need for peace and quiet collides with a high level of organizational effort. Childcare is no longer available, families are together more, expectations rise. At the same time, the turn of the year stands for new beginnings, good resolutions and the pressure to "do better in the new year".

During this phase, many mothers report (more) exhaustion, irritability or inner emptiness - and feel additional guilt for this. This burden is not an individual problem, but an expression of an unequal distribution of responsibility.

Compatibility does not fail due to motivation

In our work with mothers, we see time and again that work-life balance rarely fails due to a lack of discipline or organization. It fails because mental responsibility often remains with one person. If you constantly have to think ahead, it is difficult to switch off - even when the calendar is supposedly empty.

The turn of the year reinforces this imbalance because expectations are bundled together: harmonious holidays, rested children, relaxed relationships and clear goals for the new year are seen as the measure of all things. However, relief does not come from even better planning and even more perfectionism, but from consciously sharing responsibility.

Expressing what is going on inside is the first step towards relieving stress.
* A fresh start without pressure to optimize
The new year doesn't have to start perfectly. A slow arrival is also allowed.
* Self-management instead of self-optimization
Don't do more, but feel more clearly what is really important now - and above all what can wait or be left out.

The turn of the year can be more than just another feat of strength. If mental load is taken seriously, there is room for real relief - and for a start to the year that sustains rather than drives.
