"Why do words have no effect - even though they are clever?"
Berlin - Do you know who has a voice that is instantly recognizable, without a picture or a name? Morgan Freeman, for example: his distinctive, deep sound makes movie history out of texts and stays in your ear. The Hollywood star has just publicly criticized the fact that AI programs use his voice without permission, because a unique sound conveys identity, authenticity and authority. But it's not just actors who rely on their voice - we all do. Whether in a meeting, on stage or at the dinner table, those who are heard influence the room. And those who are truly understood lead.
The voice - much more than just sound
"The voice is our first instrument," says Jessica Wahl, voice performance coach (www.jessicwahl.de). "It reflects personality, attitude and inner clarity - and it determines whether we really meet others."
Scientific studies back up what we intuitively sense: the sound of our voice influences how competent and strong we are perceived as a leader - regardless of the content of the words themselves. Researchers show that voice pitch and timbre are decisive for listeners' assessments of dominance, trust and leadership quality.
Why bosses today are working on their voice
For many managers, voice is no longer a "soft" topic, but part of professional self-management.
"I was often overheard, even though I had a lot to say," reports Lea Sommer, Managing Director of a sustainability start-up. "Since I've been working on my voice, I've noticed that people really listen to me - and follow without hesitation."
Tobias Michel, head of an international team, is also familiar with the effect:
"My employees have told me: 'You come across as more confident, more trusting.' It wasn't _what_ I said - but _how_ I said it."
Voice, personality and leadership - that's what Jessica Wahl has in common
Jessica Wahl combines voice training with holistic personality work: "It's not about speaking louder, but _more honestly_. The voice is a mirror of our inner attitude."
In her sessions, she combines breathing, speaking and resonance work with emotional self-awareness. "Only those who feel at home in their body and voice can really move others."
Practice shows: strong voice, strong presence
Wahl's approach is not a classic "speaking course" - it is radically personal. Participants report that they have not only learned to use their voice more consciously, but also to strengthen their presence. They have learned how to maintain their inner posture without conforming and how vocal clarity significantly increases their own influence at work and in everyday life.
After all, voice is attitude - and attitude is perceived long before words are understood.

Interview: "Leading with your voice - how does that work?"
Question: Jessica, why is voice so important for managers today?
Jessica Wahl, voice performance coach: Voice is more than just sound. It conveys personality, attitude and authenticity. If you sound confident, you are not only heard, but also taken seriously - regardless of hierarchy or status. Studies show that 70% of people consciously or subconsciously judge managers by their vocal presence.
Question: Is it even possible to train your voice?
Jessica Wahl: Absolutely. But it's not about volume or a "perfect timbre". We train breath, resonance, articulation - and above all perception. If you know your voice and use it consciously, you can make your personality audible and gain presence.
Question: Are there typical mistakes that people make?
Jessica Wahl: Many people try to "improve" their voice by speaking louder or deeper. But that doesn't work in the long term. We work from the inside out: posture, breath and emotion have to be in harmony, otherwise everything comes across as artificial.
Question: How do managers realize that their training is working?
Jessica Wahl: As soon as people consciously play with their voice, the external impact of a manager changes immediately. Teams listen attentively, conversations become clearer and even difficult situations can be handled more confidently. Clients often report: "Suddenly I feel that I am really more present."
Question: Who is the training particularly suitable for?
Jessica Wahl: For anyone who wants to lead, present or persuade - in other words, for anyone who wants to be heard. It's particularly exciting for people in management positions who realize: "I have a lot to say, but I'm not making an impact." Then it quickly becomes clear that the voice is an extremely effective tool - and one that you can learn to use consciously.
