STAAA Urges Brisbane City Council to Reconsider STRA Consultation Timing During Peak Season

The Short Term Accommodation Association Australia (STAAA) has today expressed concerns over Brisbane City Council's proposed public consultation on its short-term rental accommodation (STRA) local law during the Christmas and New Year period, which coincides with the industry's peak season.

STAAA Executive Director Keiran Craig-Jones said:

"The timing of this consultation is highly problematic for our members, who are operating at full capacity during the peak season. Many of our members who are individual, small mum and dad and retiree owner operators are focused on accommodating guests during the busiest time of the year, making it extremely difficult for them to engage meaningfully with the consultation process."

"We are concerned that holding such an important consultation over the holiday period risks excluding the voices of those most affected by these proposed regulations. Our members are committed to being responsible operators and community engagement, however, this timing risks, effectively not permitting them to have their say at a critical time."

STAAA calls on Brisbane City Council to extend the consultation period or consider alternative timing that allows full participation from Brisbane short-term rental accommodation (STRA) owners and operators, ensuring any local law is informed by industry experience and evidence rather than rushed through during the busiest period of the year.

"The short-term rental accommodation (STRA) industry is an important contributor to Brisbane's tourism sector, supporting local businesses and employment," Miss Craig-Jones added. "Decisions that impact our industry should be made transparently, fairly and with full industry engagement, especially when they affect our busiest time of the year."

STAAA will continue to actively engage with members, council representatives, Members of Parliament and other industry stakeholders to ensure the concerns of Brisbane's short-term rental accommodation (STRA) owners and operators are heard and considered.
