Texfire tests its fire blankets in a real-life trial with an electric car equipped with lithium batteries
The rise of electric vehicles brings new challenges in fire safety, particularly due to the risks associated with lithium batteries. Effectively containing these fires requires fast and reliable solutions. In this context, fire blankets are emerging as a key first-response tool, although not all perform equally well under critical conditions.Texfire, a Barcelona-based company specialized in technical fire-resistant fabrics, in collaboration with the Zaragoza City Fire Department, has conducted an unprecedented test to demonstrate the effectiveness of its fire blankets on electric vehicles. In this trial, Texfire set an electric car on fire and covered it with its fire blankets to showcase their thermal resistance and ability to contain fires in electric vehicles.
With this test, Texfire reinforces its commitment to safety and technological innovation, demonstrating under real conditions the capability of its solutions to handle high-intensity fires.
Technical Data of the Test
The vehicle used in the test was a 2016 Tesla Model S 70D. The fire blanket employed was the TEXFIRE PRO model.
The vehicle's battery had a capacity of 70 kWh, made up of 6,216 cylindrical cells. Thermocouples were installed both inside and outside the vehicle to monitor the thermal evolution during the test.
The maximum temperature recorded inside reached 993 °C, reproducing a real high-risk fire scenario. Texfire's fire blanket managed to confine the flames and limit the spread of the fire, reducing the cabin temperature to 553 °C. These results highlight the product's effectiveness under extreme conditions.
The time required to deploy and position the blanket was only 20 seconds, underscoring its value as a rapid intervention tool in emergencies.
Unlike other blankets that may trap flammable gases and cause explosions, Texfire's model is designed to allow the controlled release of gases and the passage of water, which helps cool down the battery. This approach provides a safer and more effective intervention for emergency teams.
Corporate Statement
"With this test, we wanted to take one step further and show the reliability of our products in a real and highly demanding scenario. Safety is our top priority, and we want to convey to the market that our solutions are ready to face today's challenges," said Joan Ginestà, CEO of Texfire.
