Boi Marz Debuts with 'Step-One!' EP

Boi Marz, a youthful artist and songwriter emerging from the dense musical ecosystem of Lagos's mainland neighborhoods, will release a new four-track EP, Step-One!, on November 25. The project arrives at a moment when the city's Afrobeat scene, long dominated by chart-topping exports-is beginning to make more room for independent voices shaped by day-to-day realities rather than major-label polish.

The EP reflects a musician still defining himself. Rather than leaning into the glossy ambitions that often accompany new releases, the songs on Step-One! turn inward, tracing the early anxieties, hopes, and frustrations that mark the beginning of any creative pursuit. On tracks like "Danz," a brisk, rhythmic piece with minimalist production, Boi Marz approaches youthful ambition with a mix of urgency and caution. "For My Door," the EP's most emotionally weighted song, reads almost like a private admission recorded in real time-a portrait of someone negotiating responsibility, identity, and the desire to be heard.

In the studio, Boi Marz worked with producer GT Vibes (also known as Gentustar), whose understated approach allows the vocals to sit at the center of each track. GT Vibes, who has collaborated with a range of emerging Nigerian acts, shapes the EP with sparse percussion and melodic fragments that leave room for hesitation and reflection. Their collaboration suggests an attempt to avoid the high-gloss formulas dominating mainstream releases, opting instead for a smaller, more intimate sound.

For Boi Marz, Step-One! serves less as a formal statement than as documentation-a first attempt at ordering the experiences that led him toward music in the first place. The project is a modest milestone, one that neither overstates its importance nor disguises the uncertainties that come with beginning a career in an industry known for its volatility.
