In this project, Rigaku Corporation sourced Norcada's silicon nitride X-ray windows for use in its next-generation X-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectrometers. The 100 nm low-stress LPCVD membranes provided exceptional X-ray transmission efficiency while withstanding high vacuum differentials without deformation or rupture.
The chemical inertness of silicon nitride ensured long-term resistance to oxidation, plasma exposure, and moisture ingress, while the material's high mechanical strength enabled thinner window designs with improved photon throughput.
Rigaku selected silicon nitride over beryllium due to its non-toxic composition, superior toughness, and consistent performance across a broad energy range (0.1-20 keV). The project demonstrated silicon nitride's growing role as a safe, high-strength, and high-transmission alternative for X-ray optics and analytical instrumentation, especially in environments requiring both precision and durability.
