Michael Franti Urges People to Redefine Success Through

Musician and Soulshine Bali founder launches awareness effort encouraging people to live with purpose and optimism in a divided world
Internationally acclaimed musician, hotelier, and humanitarian Michael Franti is calling for a global reset on how we define success. Through his work in music, wellness, and philanthropy, Franti is launching a new awareness effort focused on inspiring people to reconnect-with themselves, with others, and with the world around them.

"Too often, we define success by what we own or what we achieve," says Franti. "But real success is about how we show up for others, how we take care of ourselves, and how we contribute to our communities. I've learned that joy and purpose go hand in hand."

Franti's message comes at a time when record numbers of people report feeling isolated and burned out. According to the World Health Organization, 1 in 4 adults worldwide experience symptoms of anxiety or depression, and a recent Gallup report found that over 60% of workers feel emotionally detached from their jobs. Franti believes this disconnection stems from a loss of meaning and belonging.

"I've met people in some of the poorest parts of the world who smile more than most people in wealthy cities," Franti says. "They may have less in terms of material things, but they're rich in connection. That's what we need to remember-success isn't measured in things, it's measured in relationships and gratitude."

From Music to Mindfulness: A Life of Purpose

For more than 40 years, Franti has performed on stages across the globe, spreading messages of unity and hope. In 2010, he and his wife Sara Franti opened Soulshine Bali, a resort and retreat center dedicated to wellness, creativity, and mindfulness. Together, they also founded Do It For The Love, a nonprofit that has brought over 3,500 families facing life-threatening illness, special needs, and injury to live concerts.

"Music heals," Franti explains. "It reminds us that even when life feels uncertain, there's still beauty to be found. Our nonprofit started with a simple idea-to give people one night of joy that could change how they feel about tomorrow."

The awareness campaign draws from these same values, encouraging people to take small, consistent actions to improve mental wellness and community connection.

A Movement for Everyday Change

Franti isn't asking for donations-he's asking for participation. His message is clear: change begins with daily choices.

"Take a walk. Call a friend. Volunteer at a local shelter. Write a song, paint, or just sit still for five minutes and breathe," he says. "You don't need a foundation or a stage to make an impact. You just need to care."

He also encourages people to disconnect from the noise of social media and reconnect with what matters. "If we spent half as much time listening to each other in real life as we do scrolling online, we'd be in a much better place as a society," Franti adds.

A Call to Redefine Success

Through his platform, Franti hopes to challenge old notions of achievement and push a broader cultural shift toward compassion-driven living. "Success isn't about perfection-it's about presence," he says. "I've had years when I was selling out shows but felt lost inside. I've also had quiet moments with my son, flying a kite in the backyard, that reminded me what real success feels like."

He's urging people everywhere to embrace a new kind of ambition-one rooted in empathy, gratitude, and purpose.

"Whether you're a CEO, a student, or a stay-at-home parent, your life matters. The way you treat people matters. The way you take care of yourself matters. That's the kind of success the world needs more of right now."

How You Can Get Involved

Franti is encouraging individuals, workplaces, and communities to take the following actions to foster well-being and connection:

*
Start local: Volunteer, donate time, or mentor someone in your community.

*
Unplug to reconnect: Take one hour a day away from screens to engage with nature or people face-to-face.

*
Practice gratitude: Write down three things you're thankful for each day.

*
Lead with empathy: Listen more than you speak. Offer kindness first.

*
Celebrate small wins: Recognize growth, not just achievements.

"Joy isn't something you find-it's something you create," Franti says. "Start small. Smile more. Help someone. That's where success begins."
