Rollerblade Feature Film Set to Bring Pre-Production

The story of Rollerblade, a Minnesota-born global phenomenon, is rolling toward the big screen. A new feature film about Scott Olson, the trailblazing inventor and founder of Rollerblade®, is officially entering pre-production in Minnesota-where the movement first began and where its next chapter will be brought to life.

Written and set to be directed by Minnesota native John Lacy, the film will trace Olson's journey from garage tinkerer to cultural disruptor, spotlighting the explosive rise of inline skating and the bold entrepreneurial spirit behind it. The film is being produced by Nick Hansen, a champion of independent storytelling.

Lacy, a veteran Hollywood actor and filmmaker, has appeared in acclaimed shows like Grey's Anatomy, NYPD Blue, and American Horror Story, and in films such as Joker: Folie à Deux, Just Mercy, and Zodiac. His latest feature, Everyone Asked About You, won Best Feature at the 2025 Golden State Film Festival.

The project is currently in the fundraising and development stage, with plans to shoot on location in Minnesota. As pre-production ramps up, Lacy and his team are launching a Midwest-wide casting search-particularly for high-level skaters and bladers who can bring authentic energy and style to the screen. The production is especially interested in finding a fit, fast-skating young actor (age 18-25) to portray a young Scott Olson during the early days of his revolutionary journey.

"This isn't just a film," says Lacy. "It's a celebration of Minnesota creativity, grit, and the kind of visionary thinking that changes culture."

Olson, who continues to skate, innovate and inspire, sees the film as an opportunity to honor the roots of the movement and ignite a new wave of momentum.

"Rollerblading was never just a trend-it was a spark," says Olson. "We started with a wild idea in Minnesota, and now we get to pass the torch to the next generation of skaters, builders, and dreamers."

With its roots in ice hockey, fitness culture, and urban street style, the Rollerblade story still echoes worldwide. Now, the film aims to bring it full circle-right back to where it all began.
