Born and raised on Fort Lewis in Washington State, Benjamin grew up surrounded by the discipline and honor of military life. Following a long family tradition of service, he enlisted in the United States Air Force shortly after high school, serving first in Texas before being selected for special duty at RAF Croughton in England. In 2013, his life changed forever when a catastrophic accident while on active duty left him with a traumatic brain injury so severe that doctors believed he would never walk again. Over the next two years, he underwent intensive rehabilitation in hospitals across the world, defying every medical prediction and ultimately regaining his ability to walk.
After being medically retired from the Air Force in 2015, Benjamin channeled his determination into education and art. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from George Washington University with a degree in Theatre and a minor in Creative Writing. During his senior year, his debut stage play American Airman was honored at the Kennedy Center's American College Theatre Festival, earning him national recognition as an award-winning playwright and writer.
His memoir American Airman: A Memoir of a Wounded Veteran expands on the emotional depth of that work, tracing his journey from military service through survival, recovery, and rediscovery. Through raw honesty and reflection, Benjamin explores the mental and emotional struggles that accompany trauma, as well as the power of faith and perseverance to overcome them.
"I was told I'd never walk again," Benjamin said . "But I learned that faith can move you even when your legs can't." His words echo the spirit of countless veterans who face invisible battles after leaving service.
