The Very High Frequency Data Exchange System (VDES) is a third-generation maritime communications system approved by the World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-15). Building on the legacy AIS, VDES adds ASM messaging and VDE data communication capabilities. This system not only enables short-range, two-way data exchange between ships and shores via VHF, but also enables long-range, two-way data exchange between ships and shores globally via a low-orbit satellite network.
As the global ocean accelerates its digitalization and intelligentization, the Very High Frequency Data Exchange System (VDES), a third-generation maritime communications technology, is rapidly replacing the traditional AIS system and becoming the core infrastructure for building a new architecture for global maritime information connectivity. Building on the existing AIS functionality, VDES introduces ASM messages and VDE data channels. This not only enables near-shore ship-to-ship and ship-to-shore data connectivity, but also leverages low-orbit satellite networks to achieve global coverage in ocean-going scenarios. It offers significant advantages such as high reliability, low latency, and scalability.
