Belaws Highlights Thailand's Growing Appeal for Foreign Freelancers and Digital Nomads in 2026
Bangkok, Thailand - November 2025. Belaws, a legal and accounting one stop service in Thailand, offers end-to-end solutions from a team of experts who demystify Thai law and guide clients through every stage of launching and growing their business, today noted that the country is expected to maintain its position as a top destination for freelancers and digital nomads in 2026.Thailand's attractiveness is based on its affordability, a variety of destinations that support freelancers such as Chiang Mai, Koh Samui and Phuket. Thailand offers active expat communities, and overall high quality of life for residents.
However, freelancers and digital nomads cannot simply arrive and start working. The correct visa and a work permit must be obtained. However, new visa options are now available specifically for remote workers, allowing them to live and work in Thailand.

"Thailand continues to improve its appeal to foreign freelancers and digital nomads by positioning itself as a secure, and globally competitive hub," said Vincent Birot, Founder of Belaws. "With its strong digital infrastructure, supportive policies, and exceptional quality of life, the country offers an ideal environment for freelancers and digital nomads alike. At Belaws, our mission is to make it simple for freelancers to get started, so they can focus on doing what they love while enjoying everything Thailand has to offer."
Thailand: A Leading Destination for Freelancers and Digital Nomads
Thailand's popularity among foreign freelancers and digital nomads is based upon several factors:
Affordable living: Low cost of rent, food, and transport compared to Western countries.
High quality of life: Access to modern services, great food and highly regarded.
Strong infrastructure: Fast, reliable internet and modern facilities in major cities.
Convenient workspaces: Easy access to co-working hubs and good public transport in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
Diverse environments: Choice of city life, beaches, or mountain retreats across Thailand.
Established community: Large, welcoming expat and digital nomad networks for easy integration.
Visa options: Multiple pathways including the Long Term Residency Visa (LTR), Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) and PEO services.
Thailand: Visa Options for Freelancers
Thailand now offers two main visa options designed for digital nomads and freelancers, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) and the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa - Work From Thailand category. More info about the LTR visa here: https://belaws.com/thailand/thailand-long-term-visa-ltr/
The DTV may be a solution for remote professionals working for foreign clients or companies out of Thailand. However, it's important to note that DTV holders cannot work for Thai companies or conduct any business in Thailand. It provides a 5-year validity with stays of up to 180 days per entry, extendable once per visit, and allows multiple entries.
Holders of a DTV can also bring dependents, making it an attractive choice for digital nomads. However, the DTV may not be a suitable option for long-term stays due to several limitations including the inability or difficulty in opening a bank account. Long term stays in Thailand also increase the risk of tax residency being created.
Foreign nationals who stay in Thailand for more than 180 days within a calendar year will be considered Thai tax residents. Being a Tax Resident creates additional obligations, such as obtaining a Tax ID and filing annual tax returns.
While the Digital Nomad (DTV) visa is valid for up to five years, it is mainly intended for temporary remote work rather than permanent residence. This is highlighted by its 180 day stay limit per entry, with only one possible extension. This therefore, exposes the holder to additional risk.
For individuals from countries with stricter tax regimes, acquiring Thai tax residency may also lead to challenges from the authorities in their home country, adding another layer of risk. If you are considering a long-term stay in Thailand, it is strongly recommended to consult a qualified tax advisor to fully understand the potential risks and obligations.
The LTR Visa, on the other hand, targets high-earning professionals and established remote workers. While it offers the possibility of a 10-year residence period, fast-track airport privileges, and tax incentives, it comes with higher entry requirements. For example applicants must earn at least USD 80,000 per year (applicants with a salary of at least USD 40,000 may also be eligible, however they must have provide additional proof of qualification, have a master's degree or higher), have health insurance coverage of at least USD 50,000, and have an employment contract with a qualified company, such as a listed public company, a large private firm with USD 50 million in revenue over three years, or one of their wholly owned subsidiaries.
As a result, the LTR Visa is more suited to senior professionals or entrepreneurs seeking long-term relocation rather than short-term freelance stays.
PEO Services: Unlocking Thailand for Freelancers
A Professional Employer Organization service, also known as an Employer of Record, offers an appealing alternative for professionals looking for an option to relocate to Thailand
A PEO service provides a quick and efficient option for entering the Thai market. While the DTV and LTR (Work from Thailand) visas are popular among digital nomads, both come with limitations. Neither visa allows holders to obtain a work permit, and the DTV in particular restricts long-term stays, requiring holders to leave Thailand after 180 days (extendable once for another 180 days).
Freelancers who would like to work directly with Thai companies or clients, or who plan to stay in Thailand long-term, may find PEO services a more suitable option. These services provide a structured employment arrangement, including a business visa and work permit, allowing individuals to live and work in Thailand and have the option to renew their visa and work permit each year.
Another advantage of using a PEO is the ongoing support it provides in dealing with Thailand's requirements, including employee onboarding as well as accounting and payroll management.
Furthermore, the PEO company can also invoice clients both in Thailand or abroad provided that it is within the scope of authorized service activities.
By engaging a PEO service, an individual can come to Thailand and begin operations quickly before undergoing the company registration process for their own entity or company. PEO services also provide an opportunity for clients to test the Thai market and establish whether it would be a good opportunity for their project.
What Type of Positions are Suitable for a PEO?
While a PEO (Professional Employer Organization), offers a solid entry point into the Thai market, freelancers and digital nomads should understand that these services are not suitable for every type of job or business activities.
PEO arrangements are best suited for individuals involved in:
digital consulting,
remote project management,
regional business development,
marketing strategy, or
C level/management roles.
Applicants should ensure their PEO provider is legitimate. The job title and duties must align with the company's registered business objectives and permitted work scope.

Belaws: Simplifying Business Setup in Thailand
Choosing between a digital nomad visa such as the LTR or DTV and a PEO service depends on your personal and professional needs. If you require flexibility and short-term stays while working remotely for foreign clients, the DTV may be the better option. However, if you seek a more stable, long-term arrangement that allows you to do business in Thailand, a PEO service could be more suitable.
