04-22-2008 11:08 AM CET | Associations & Organizations

Press release from: GÖRG Rechtsanwälte

Prominent new partner for GÖRG: As of 1 May 2008, attorney and notary Dr. Hans-Michael Giesen joins GÖRG from Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, bolstering GÖRG's M&A team from the Berlin office.

"With Dr. Giesen, we've been able to attract a first class partner with international expertise and many years of experience who will perfectly complement our transactions practice and significantly strengthens our present team" commented Dr. Roland Hoffmann-Theinert, head of GÖRG's Berlin office and a member of the firm's Management Board.

With this new addition, GÖRG continues to expand its Corporate Law and Tax, Mergers & Acquisitions group, a strategy pursued consistently in the past years. Dr. Giesen, who has a broad network of national and international contacts, considerably enhances GÖRG's international transactions practice. This practice has seen sustained growth in the recent past after GÖRG's withdrawal from the DLA Group of firms.

At GÖRG, Dr. Giesen will integrate and further expand his present practice into a leading national firm with an internationally-active client base. Giesen asserts: “With GÖRG, I like the flexibility and the entrepreneurial approach of a manageably-sized large law firm which clearly strives to being a leader within the group of independent firms. Many of my clients will also appreciate the comprehensive full-service approach of GÖRG.”
Dr. Giesen commenced his career as an attorney in 1985 with Shearman & Sterling in New York, moving to Westrick & Eckholdt in Frankfurt/M in 1987. From there, he went on to head up the 1990 founding and ensuing growth of his firm’s Berlin office (as of 1991 Bruckhaus Westrick Stegemann). During this period, he primarily advised foreign clients on their activities in Berlin and the new German Federal States, especially with regard to large scale privatisations.
From 1996 to 2000, Dr. Giesen managed his former firm’s New York office, while advising on numerous international corporate, finance and lease transactions, and establishing a comprehensive network of international contacts.
Upon returning to the Berlin office of the merged firm Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Dr. Giesen became the head of that office’s corporate law practice group. Since then, Dr. Giesen has advised on a multitude of national and international M&A transactions and corporate reorganisations, in particular, recently acting on the sale of Landesbank Berlin Holding AG by the Federal State of Berlin to the Deutscher Sparkassen- and Giroverband (German Savings Bank Association).
