Postsouthern (2025) by Luke Powers

Nashville, TN - October 11, 2025 - Americana singer-songwriter Luke Powers announces the release of POSTSOUTHERN, a collection of songs that reflect on the South's deep heritage and enduring contradictions. Blending folk, country, blues, and rock, the record takes inspiration from William Faulkner's observation that "the past isn't dead. It isn't even past."

Powers, an eighth-generation Tennessean, uses history, folklore, and family stories to shape the album's narratives. "I wanted POSTSOUTHERN to feel like a novel in music - exploring the South honestly, both its richness and its darker legacies," says Powers.

The album is the last to feature the musicianship of the late Tommy Spurlock (The Band, Leon Russell, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowell) on guitars and pedal steel. Rebecca Weiner Tompkins (Patti Smith, Life in a Blender, Conrad y Skordalia) brings her unique sound on violin.

Highlights from POSTSOUTHERN include:

"Willis Powers West Tennessee" - the tale of Powers' ancestor who fought for the Union in the Civil War and died in Andersonville Prison.

"Confederama" - recalling a childhood school trip to the once-famous roadside attraction.

"Spirit of the Mountains" - a tribute to Signal Mountain writer Emma Bell Miles, who lived in simplicity and wrote about the wilds around her.

"March 19 1906" - commemorating Ed Johnson, a lynching victim in Chattanooga, TN.

"Tommy's Got a Mule" - a witty, mostly true story dedicated to the memory of Tommy Spurlock.

POSTSOUTHERN is available now on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, and all major streaming services.
