A growth medium or culture medium is a solid or liquid or semi-solid designed to support the growth of microorganisms or animal cells. Cell culture media line includes products designed to support the growth and maintenance of a variety of mammalian cells and cell lines. The growth factors used to supplement media are often derived from the serum of animal blood, such as fetal bovine serum (FBS), bovine calf serum, equine serum, and porcine serum. Most cell cultures depend on animal serum or human serum for successful growth and maintenance of adherent or suspension cells. Cell culture serum is a complex organic solution containing proteins, polypeptides, growth factors, amino acids, nucleosides, lipids, carbohydrates, hormones, vitamins and other components. It serves not only as a nutrient for a variety of mammalian cells or insect cells in culture, but also promotes other cell functions such as proliferation and attachment.
