BEAMING LAUNCHES THE FIRST TRAINING MODULES TO EMPOWER

Budapest, Hungary, September 18, 2025 - The Bioeconomy Excellence Alliance for Stimulating Innovative and Inclusive Green Transition (BEAMING) has launched the first of a set of training modules, marking a major step forward in its effort to accelerate sustainable bioeconomy innovation through cooperation in higher education. The project aims to reinforce knowledge, skills, and institutional capacity in countries that have historically had lower participation in EU research and innovation, particularly in Central-Eastern Europe, South-Eastern Europe, and the Western Balkans.
BEAMING is built around four interlinked knowledge pillars: Bioeconomy Research, Open Science, Knowledge Valorisation, and Inclusive Innovation Culture. These pillars collectively support the development of an academic ecosystem that integrates sustainable research practices, societal engagement, and effective use of research outputs. The training programme has been designed to equip researchers, educators, and institutional leaders with the tools and frameworks needed to generate real-world impact and align with the EU's Green Deal and Circular Bioeconomy goals.
BIOECONOMY RESEARCH MODULE
This module provides participants with essential competencies to engage in cutting-edge bioeconomy research with real societal and economic impact. Key learning areas include:
• Methods to foster interdisciplinary research approaches aligned with real-world challenges.
• Skills development for sustainable biomass production and advancing bio-based industries.
• In-depth understanding of bioeconomy policy frameworks and governance.
• Tools to identify emerging research opportunities and forge cross-institutional collaborations.
OPEN SCIENCE MODULE
Recognising the growing need for transparency and inclusivity in research, this module supports participants in embedding open science principles in their work. Topics include:
• Best practices for open access publishing and using European Open Science platforms.
• Techniques to manage FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) data and ensure data transparency.
• Training on citizen science approaches to involve communities in the research process.
• Strategic guidance for institutions seeking to implement and champion open science policies.
The launch of these modules reflects BEAMING's commitment to building capacities that empower academics and institutions in Europe's widening regions to lead the way in sustainable innovation and collaborative research.
Both courses are freely available to higher education professionals and researchers through the BEAMING training portal.

CURRENT CHALLENGES IN THE BIOECONOMY
The bioeconomy is an economic system that utilizes renewable biological resources to produce a wide range of goods and services, aiming for sustainability and reduced reliance on non-renewables. However, in the present day, bioeconomy faces significant challenges. There is an urgent need to address sustainability issues, such as the depletion of resources, climate change and rising inequality. Moreover, the effective transfer of knowledge and technology among key stakeholders of higher education institutions, governments, civil society, and industry is essential to drive innovation and the practical application of advancements in bioeconomy. The sector requires structural and policy reforms that promote excellence and transdisciplinary collaboration. These challenges underscore the need to establish effective cross-border collaboration to address current issues in bioeconomy and harness its potential for sustainable development.
