Recent Breakthroughs 2024-2025

CATL introduced the Shenxing PLUS battery in 2024, achieving around 600 km of range in 10 minutes at a 4C rate. In 2025, CATL revealed the second-generation Shenxing, capable of 520 km in just 5 minutes and achieving 5% to 80% charging within 15 minutes even at -10 °C. More than sixty models will adopt Shenxing technology in 2025.

EVE Energy launched its Omnicell large cylindrical 6C battery in 2024, offering 300 km of range in 5 minutes, 10% to 80% charging in 9 minutes at room temperature, and 25 minutes at -30 °C. Expansion into commercial vehicles began in 2025.

SVOLT Energy advanced its Short Blade platform with a 5C LFP battery delivering 10% to 80% in 10 minutes at 188 Wh/kg and 3,500 cycles, which entered production in December 2024. A 6C NCM version now targets 10% to 80% in 8.5 minutes, with vehicle deployments starting in 2025.

Greater Bay Technology rolled out its XFC battery and infrastructure ecosystem, pairing 6C packs with 600 kW, 1000 V chargers capable of 600 A. Demonstrations showed 30% to 80% charging in 5 minutes for 6C vehicles and 10 minutes for 3C vehicles.

CALB Group unveiled a U-shaped round-cell architecture cutting internal resistance by around 50% and supporting 6C+ charging. Energy density reaches 300 Wh/kg in NCM and around 200 Wh/kg in LFP/LMFP, with broad applications expected in 2025.

Transition from 4C to 6C

The industry crossed an important threshold in 2024 with 4C batteries moving into mass production. By 2025, the industry has demonstrated 6C readiness with 5-minute charging and improved cold-weather performance. Electrode engineering and electrolyte additives are enabling higher charge rates without sacrificing safety.

Charging Infrastructure Expansion

Chemistry Diversification

Dual-Track Ecosystem: Fast Charging and Swapping

Ultra-fast charging is being complemented by battery swapping. CATL plans 1,000 swap stations in 2025 and 10,000 by 2028, while NIO continues expanding its 3-minute swap network. Fast charging supports highways and long-distance travel, while swapping benefits urban fleet operators and apartment dwellers.

Commercial Vehicles Adoption

High-C batteries are increasingly used in commercial fleets, reducing downtime with short, high-power top-ups. EVE's expansion into commercial vehicle batteries in 2025 demonstrates readiness beyond passenger cars.

Supply Chain Scale-Up

From 2023 to 2025, dedicated production lines have been built for ultra-fast batteries. Plants such as Greater Bay Technology's Nansha facility and CATL's fast-charge electrode lines are scaling, while formation processes are optimized for high-rate charging, ensuring longevity despite high current densities.
