Global Parents for Eczema Research (GPER) Announces 2025 Childhood Eczema Prevention Grant Recipients
Santa Barbara, CA, September 9, 2025 - A decade ago, Global Parents for Eczema Research (GPER) was founded with a simple but powerful mission: to reduce the suffering of children with eczema and to give parents a voice in shaping research priorities. Today, GPER is carrying that mission forward by directly funding innovative science to make rapid progress towards a cure and prevention.GPER is excited to announce the recipients of the 2025 Childhood Eczema Prevention Grants, each awarded $50,000 to pursue groundbreaking studies focused on preventing eczema before it begins.
Dr. Jessica Hui of National Jewish Health in Denver will explore how a mother's skin health and environmental exposures during pregnancy influence the risk of eczema in her child. By analyzing biological samples and survey data, her study will aim to identify modifiable prenatal risk factors for eczema, laying the foundation for early-life prevention.
Dr. Derek Chu of McMaster University in Canada will lead a randomized controlled trial testing a combination of interventions, including optimized skin care and reduced exposure to chemicals and detergents, delivered within 24 hours of birth. His work will generate critical evidence for parent-centered prevention strategies.
"These projects represent the very leading edge of eczema prevention research," said Korey Capozza, Executive Director of GPER. "We are excited to see the results which we hope will lead us to a future in which fewer children suffer from severe eczema."
GPER launched the Childhood Eczema Prevention Grant Program in 2024 to fund bold, high-impact research aimed at uncovering the causes of eczema and identifying ways to stop it before it starts. The program is part of GPER's broader commitment to accelerating progress toward a cure by 2030.
